LIVING OCEANS

Living Oceans is an ongoing exploration into relationship, presence, and shared awareness with the ocean — and with the dolphins and whales who call it home.

This work grows from lived experience in the water, guided by humility, curiosity, and deep respect for the intelligence and mystery of cetacean life. Rather than arriving with answers, Living Oceans begins with listening.

Cetaceans have lived in the world’s oceans for tens of millions of years — far longer than human civilization has existed. They carry a depth of lived experience in Earth’s waters that we are only beginning to sense.

Much of their world remains unknown to us. We still do not understand the full nature of their songs, their communication, or the ways they experience time, relationship, and place.

Living Oceans begins from a place of humility and curiosity. Rather than entering the ocean to test hypotheses or impose interpretations, we enter to be present, to listen, and to witness what reveals itself through relationship.

What we receive, we share — as lived experience, as story, and as invitation.

Living Oceans is a living field of work devoted to: – Presence in the ocean with dolphins and whales – Relationship-led exploration rather than outcome-driven research – Witnessing and sharing moments of connection, play, intelligence, and mutual curiosity – Offering these experiences and insights in ways that invite people back into felt relationship with the natural world

At its heart, Living Oceans is about remembering that we are participants in a much larger living system — one that continues to surprise, delight, and teach us when we approach with openness.

The Living Oceans work expresses itself through several interconnected project streams. These are not fixed endpoints, but living pathways that evolve through experience.

What we do – Spend extended, respectful time in the water with dolphins and whales in multiple ocean environments – Allow cetaceans to initiate, guide, and shape interactions – Maintain a calm, non-intrusive presence that supports natural behavior

What emerges – Observations of naturally occurring behaviors, approaches, and interactions – Insights that arise through repeated, long-term presence – Moments of shared stillness, play, curiosity, and recognition

Deliverables – Field notes and reflections – Video and photographic documentation – Sound recordings and ambient audio – Written and spoken storytelling drawn directly from lived experience

Living Oceans includes an ongoing effort to document this work through film and sound — allowing story to emerge from within the water rather than being imposed from outside it.

Forms this may take – A feature-length documentary (longer-term vision) – Short films and episodic releases – Educational video segments – Museum, gallery, or installation-based presentations

The intention is not to explain the ocean, but to help people feel what becomes possible in relationship with it.

Living Oceans translates lived ocean experience into offerings that meet people where they are — in classrooms, homes, and communities.

Educational offerings may include – Classroom-friendly video content – Home-school curriculum modules – Guided listening and reflection experiences using ocean sound – Teacher discussion guides and companion materials – Public talks, screenings, and community gatherings

These offerings invite curiosity, wonder, and a renewed sense of relationship with the ocean.

Living Oceans offers carefully held experiences that allow people to meet the ocean — and themselves — in new ways.

These experiences emphasize ease, presence, shared joy, and mutual respect.

Living Oceans also explores gentle dolphin immersion experiences for pregnant mothers in Bimini.

These offerings emphasize – Calm, reverent presence – Small group containers – Slow pacing and deep listening – Bonding, relaxation, and embodied joy

One or two five-day summer sessions may be offered initially, allowing this work to unfold organically and responsively.

Living Oceans is committed to helping people feel more at home in the sea.

This series supports everyday people in becoming comfortable, relaxed, and confident in ocean environments.

Focus areas include – Floating and buoyancy – Breath and relaxation – Feeling supported by the water – Building trust through experience

Living Oceans also includes a freediving course that emphasizes ease, awareness, and respectful presence — approaching depth as a conversation rather than a conquest.

Over decades in the water, Living Oceans founder Joe Noonan has experienced moments of profound connection with dolphins and whales.

These encounters are shared sparingly and respectfully — as lived experiences rather than conclusions.

Examples include moments where dolphins have chosen prolonged stillness alongside a human presence, matching breath and orientation, and remaining long after curiosity alone would explain. Other encounters have included whales acknowledging presence through mirrored movement, pacing, or shared attention.

These moments are offered as invitations into wonder, not as claims.

Living Oceans is not a finished project. It is a living relationship — one that continues to evolve through presence, listening, and shared experience.

Those who feel called to support, participate, or simply follow along are warmly welcomed.

Together, we continue exploring what becomes possible when we meet the ocean — and its inhabitants — with curiosity, respect, and appreciation.
